  • In the spring of 1976, Joseph Boriello brought back from Thailand to Salvadore Larca in New York, a codefendant of Madonna, a sample of heroin which, when tested, was found to be pure. Larca authorized Joseph Boriello to return to Bangkok to buy a kilogram of heroin.
Look how far Larca fell usually he was bringing in heroin from sicily through the docks. Now he had to send couriers to thailand to smuggle 1kg in a suitcase.I think Galante completely took over the sicilian pipeline
No he did not. The Sicilian Mafia did, and the so called zips, who were sent by the Sicilian Mafia to NY, controlled the market.
Wasnt lacra a zip?Heroin was flooding NY in 1976 why didnt he have a piece of it.Galante must of made a deal with the sicilians

Yes, he was a soldier with the Genovese. He was one of the guys that was set up by Vincent Cafaro on that heroin deal.

Hired_Goonz wrote: Tue Jan 26, 2021 7:16 pm Here's some info on his arrest back in 1976:
  • In the spring of 1976, Joseph Boriello brought back from Thailand to Salvadore Larca in New York, a codefendant of Madonna, a sample of heroin which, when tested, was found to be pure. Larca authorized Joseph Boriello to return to Bangkok to buy a kilogram of heroin. Boriello returned to New York in June, 1976, with the kilogram of heroin, and it was sold here for $100,000. A second trip was then organized. Larca supplied Boriello with four false bottom suitcases and a budget of $100,000 for the purchase of 10 kilograms of heroin, travel expenses for himself and two couriers. Boriello secured Jan Portman and Eugene Travers for the latter task. In July, 1976, he returned to Bangkok to purchase the heroin. When the couriers arrived, the heroin was packed in the false bottom suitcases. Boriello left Bangkok on August 16, 1976; the two couriers, carrying the heroin and travelling separately, left for New York the next day. Both were arrested in Honolulu and immediately agreed to cooperate. Most of the heroin Travers carried was replaced with a substitute. On August 19, 1976, he flew to New York with two government agents, with the substituted substance, along with approximately 32 grams of heroin, packed in two of the suitcases.

The same day, Madonna, under the name of Paul de Robertis, rented a red Ford Granada from Hertz at New York's LaGuardia airport. He drove the car from the airport to a parking lot near his home where he left it. On August 20, 1976, Boriello contacted Travers at the latter's apartment in the Bronx. After telling Travers to wait for further instructions, Boriello went to Larca's home where he met with Larca and Madonna. Larca took Boriello to
    [556 F.Supp. 263]
the parking lot to pick up the red Ford Granada that Madonna had rented and parked there the day before. Larca told Boriello to pick up the heroin and deliver it in the Hertz car at 5:00 p.m. to 58th Street and Fifth Avenue, across from F.A.O. Schwarz.

Boriello went to Travers' apartment and took possession of the suitcases that he believed were filled with heroin. While he was loading the suitcases into the trunk of the car, he was arrested. He immediately agreed to cooperate. Boriello then proceeded to the Manhattan rendezvous under government surveillance. He was met by Madonna and Larca. Boriello gave Madonna the keys to the Hertz car. Larca gave Boriello the keys to Larca's car and told Boriello to go home to wait for a call. Madonna entered the car on the driver's side and Larca on the passenger side, at which point both were arrested. Madonna advised the arresting officers that he was Paul de Robertis but subsequently used his real name.

Madonna's defense was lack of knowledge and intent; he claimed that he was innocently accompanying Larca and knew nothing about the heroin. Because of that defense, the government was permitted to adduce through the testimony of Nicholas Visceglie, then under sentence on a state conviction, that he had been involved in 1972 with Madonna and Larca in a deal to buy 10 kilograms of heroin for $200,000, but he and his partner could not raise the cash and the deal was called off.

The wheels of justice moved a lot quicker back then huh? Arrested in August, convicted by November lol. So apparently this Boriello who flipped, his wife got kidnapped after these guys were convicted:

Does anyone know the story behind this? I can't find any info on whether this lady ever turned up or not. I can't imagine why Matty and his partners would want something like this to go down AFTER the guilty verdicts but BEFORE sentencing. Seems completely retarded. Could her disappearance have been unrelated? If she never showed up again that would only enhance Madonna's rep on the streets.
So lucky if they got caught in Thailand that would of been the death penalty

Here's some info on his arrest back in 1976:

Mason_dixon wrote: Sun Jan 24, 2021 10:00 am Matthew Madonna place in history cannot be overlooked. He groomed and supplied Nicky Barnes. I am very surprised with his ties to the Bronx he was not brought in by the Bonannos. I would guess he was a Luke associate going back years. Its almost like he must of had his own pipe line for importation. I doubt he wanted to get made back in the 70s due to the deal or die rule. Once he gets inducted their is very little talk of him still dealing in heroin and almost like he traded that racket in for gambling. I think Matty is very under rated and a very shadowy figure in the Mobs he was an old school gangster and the Meldish shows that. However on appeal does it not seem likely that Crea and him could get their cases overturned. There are no tapes. There is very little evidence its all circumstantial. If it wasn't for Londonnio id say this is just as likely a personal need between Caldwell and Meldish or Caldwell was hired by the Bonannos as Mancuso seems a bit trigger happy and he was highly disrespected by Melissa's well.
He didnt get back into drugs because all the guys he was in business with had either died or were in prison.20 years later the game completely changed it was the guy who had mexican contacts rather than sicilian who were able to take over the markets.Matty was a distrubuter not an importer like galante or the laporta brothers he was a level down from these guys or maybe even a few.
Salvatore Larca Sr was his partner back in '76. I believe he is deceased and his son is still in prison.

there's definitely a wealth gap in the mob just like there is in 'real' society, and there were definitely people under DeFede making more money themselves than he alleged to have made - but at the same time, the family was more or less in disarray. It must have been a tough time to take over and try to get your arms around everything, figure out who had what going on, and reign it all in. On top of the fact that Amuso was probably demanding all, if not a sizable portion of the money that was coming up to DeFede. Even when Amuso and Casso were on the street they supposedly sized certain Capo's rackets 100% for themselves. They were coming off of the admin falling apart, Casso and others flipping, and a blood letting that saw the death of some big earners / capos. Even if the rackets left behind by some of the people like Salerno and Facciola were picked up by their successors, there's no way they translated to 100% of what it was before their deaths.

Plus $250/year completely untaxed in the mid 90s, on top of other 'perks' like getting things 'on the arm' is nothing to sneeze at, IMO

Tommy Scafidi did the same thing. He did his whole big and then flipped as he was about to be released because he thought he was going to get whacked.
