A reputed mobster who lives in Medford received an 18-month federal prison sentence on Tuesday for his role in a marijuana distribution ring, according to court records.
Louis DiNunzio, 29, was sentenced in US District Court in Boston, where he had pleaded guilty in September to conspiring to distribute marijuana. He was also ordered to forfeit $10,000, US Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz’s office said in a statement.
DiNunzio is the son of Anthony DiNunzio and nephew of Carmen “The Cheese Man” DiNunzio, who both allegedly led the New England Mafia before they were imprisoned for other crimes.
According to prosecutors, Louis DiNunzio and three other men conspired between July 2013 and February 2014 to import large amounts of high-grade marijuana from California to Massachusetts, where it was distributed.
Among the shipments was a 23-pound haul of a potent type of marijuana known as “Skywalker,” which probably generated a profit of about $20,000, prosecutors wrote in a prior court filing.
Carmine P. Lepore, a lawyer for Louis DiNunzio, said Wednesday in an e-mail that he had hoped the presiding judge would consider a sentence of home confinement, “considering my client’s lack of criminal record and non-violent nature of the offense. However by the time of sentencing, it was clear, by the sentences given to my client’s co-defendants, that she would impose a small period of incarceration.”
Chief Judge Patti B. Saris previously sentenced co-defendants Joseph Spagnuolo-Kazonis and John Woodman to terms of 18 months and 12 months and one day, respectively, court records show.
Sentencing for a third man, Robert Fitzpatrick, has been deferred until March 2017 while he completes a drug treatment program, record show.
“Although I am disappointed that our [home confinement] recommendation was not followed, I am pleased that the sentence imposed was less than what the government sought, and consistent with the sentence given to” DiNunzio’s co-defendants, Lepore wrote on Wednesday.
Prosecutors had sought a 21-month penalty for DiNunzio and wrote in their sentencing recommendation that he was “responsible for between 40 and 60 kilograms” of marijuana and that “his past criminal activity is troubling.”
The government said Louis DiNunzio has a prior conviction for “running a ‘casino-style’ gambling table at the Sons of Italy social club in Boston” and also worked at his uncle’s cheese shop in the North End, which the FBI had bugged during its investigation of Carmen DiNunzio.
Louis DiNunzio must surrender to authorities by March 18, records show.
