There’s actually very little law enforcement pressure against the Mafia in USA nowadays. They just changed up tactics and operate correctly......in the shadows. They got smarter and they stopped having hits and mob wars. They try to blend in and go under the radar now.
That means, there will be less heat. If there was ever Gotti-style leadership again, you would see the newspaper headlines come back. All the current Bosses learned how to not act, and newspapers like sexy headlines (murders) and stories.
They still kill people, but it’s kept as a very last resort. It’s far more effective to just intimidate the ever-loving shit out of someone.
Most average Joe’s fall in line with basic intimidation (especially when they know it’s the Mob and can be backed up, if needed).
Also, keeping murders to a minimum means law enforcement really won’t have much reason to target them. Murders were always the main catalyst. Citizens only pressure law enforcement to act when they see murders. Between RICO and surveillance technology the bosses are afraid to talk to anyone. They’re still around but they keep a low profile. But that makes for boring news. In the 1990s everyone was going away for life or flipping and bringing down more people. So LCN guys put the moratorium on hits and will only kill people now if it's absolutely necessary. The last hit in New York was Michael Meldish in 2013 (by the Luchese family). The last hit in Philadelphia was Gino DiPietro in 2012. In 2014/ 2015 DeCavalcante captain Charles Stango tried to get permission to kill soldier Luigi Oliveri but it didn't go anywhere. They'll just chase guys or put them on the shelf now. There has been some other murders that have not been solved though, is it that they do not kill anymore or just do less with a lot more precision.
