Montoglio is full of crap about a lot of stuff to be sure. Murder Machine doesn't mention anything about him witnessing bodies being dismembered by Demeo's crew, but I saw him on a show once talking about how he went to the Gemini one time and the guys gave him "spaghetti and red sauce" to eat while they had bodies hanging upside down. He said it was some kind of test, to see if he was hardcore enough to sit there and eat as they dismembered a corpse. Gimme a fuckin break here, guy. Even just reading through the lines of Murder Machine you can see he's full of shit. Dominick runs away to California with no money, but Gaggi "makes up a lie" that Dominick actually stole a bunch of his shylock money he was supposed to collect. Really? Nino just made that up did he?
I also vaguely seem to remember some controversy over his service record. Didn't some Vietnam veterans group complain to Capeci over Montiglio's claims?
He claimed to be a Green Beret, and I guess someone (maybe Capeci) reached out to a group of former Green Berets who served in Vietnam and none of them had ever heard of him. Since he cooperated his service record is sealed and there's no way to prove or disprove his claims of serving in Special Forces, but they're a very small community and the fact that none of those SF veterans had heard of him is pretty telling.
Thanks, I guess I was remembering it a little backwards. I thought that I recalled that some veteran's group was kind of pissed at Capeci for just printing Montiglio's claims but I guess I'm mixing it up with someone else.
I haven't read Murder Machine in quite a while but I seem to remember he presented his supposed service in Vietnam like something from a movie. Body parts of little kids being blown everywhere, "Uncle Ben" watching his back, complete with a Vietnam flashback years later when he drops acid. I think that anything Montiglio says about anything should be taken with a whole truckload of salt.
