He was made in 2003. I guess 1998 was when he hooked up with the Bonannos.

Are you sure he was made in 2003? The French article states based on official documents that he was sponsored into the Bonanno family by Gerlando Sciascia.
I always thought there wasn't a known date as to when Montagna was made into the Bonanno Family.

The French article states: "C'est en 1998 que Montagna est invité à se joindre au clan Bonnano par Gerlando Sciascia, surnommé George le Canadien, selon des documents de l'ambassade des États-Unis."

The French expression se joindre à quelqu'un means to join someone. In the above sentence, the meaning is that Gerlando Sciascia invited Montagna to join the Bonanno group in 1998. Until we know exactly what was written in those U.S. Embassy documents, I would steer clear of equating inviting with sponsoring. As well, there is also the interpretation that, in 1998, Sciascia wanted Montagna on record as a Bonanno associate.
Good eye on that. Yeah wasn't George killed in 1999..?

He was listed as an associate when he was busted with Patty DeFilippo and his crew in early 2003. Who knows though.

Yea he had NO chance on beating this case obviously and it was well known that he lives like a king in prison. As Jack said above, he more than likely feels safer in prison as he knows he is definitely on Vito's hit list. Stay in jail for 10-15 and get out and be the man again and hope the Sicilians are no more when you get out. There is no way he serves life because this was a plea deal. He would have possibly seen life if he went to trial.

Very informative article about how Desjardins was caught by intercepting his Blackberry messages. It also reveals that Montagna had been used as a messenger between New York and Montreal long before he was deported to Canada.

Betrayed by his BlackBerry, the kingpin pleads guilty Raynald Desjardins
La Presse, July 7, 2015

The frenetic use of its BlackBerry sank the boss Raynald Desjardins.

This major player in the Montreal Mafia sent multiple messages encrypted ultrasûrs deemed the murder of Salvatore Montagna sponsor the aspirant.

In addition to plotting to murder his rival, Desjardins planned to attack other clan members Montagna, also reveals the evidence of record.

But the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) successfully intercepted encrypted messages and thus halt the bloodshed, says the evidence. Desjardins is among the top criminals in Canada - if not the first - to have been stuck that way.

Salvatore Montagna, former acting head of the crime family of New York Bonanno, was killed Nov. 24, 2011 in Vaudry island, Charlemagne. The 40 year old man was found lifeless and bloodied on the shore of the L'Assomption River.

The media can now reveal information in evidence since Desjardins pleaded guilty yesterday at the judicial center Gouin to a reduced charge of conspiracy to murder. Dressed in a black jacket and jeans, the guy of 61 years remained impassive in the dock. September co-accused them still awaiting trial. Their names and evidence concerning them are still affected to a publication ban.

The day of the murder, the RCMP is quick to call the Sûreté du Québec (to investigate the homicide) to transmit to the Quebec police force information on the crime. Is that the RCMP had already begun to intercept encrypted conversations "PIN type PIN" sent by Raynald Desjardins as part of its own investigation into the Mafia (his area of ??expertise).

Desjardins was arrested a month after the murder of Montagna. He was wearing a bulletproof vest. The guy is kind of cautious and even suspicious. It was traveling in an armored vehicle, often escorted by an armed bodyguard. Laval residence was equipped with a system of surveillance cameras and a wave jamming device. A Glock loaded pistol hidden under the sofa was seized by police.

From enemies to allies

In 2010-2011, while the Montreal Mafia is shaken by a series of murders, Desjardins, Montagna and other clan leaders have formed an alliance to overthrow the Rizzuto clan. However, a conflict broke out between them in spring 2011.

The Desjardins clan then accuses him of appropriating Montagna illicit activities sectors including sports paris and loan sharking, through intimidation.
At the time, the godfather Vito Rizzuto is still imprisoned in the United States (he died of natural causes in December 2013, a little over a year after his return to Montreal).

A few months after the start of the conflict within the alliance, in September 2011, Desjardins suffered a spectacular attempted murder in Laval.

On the morning of September 16, Desjardins and his bodyguard, Jonathan Mignacca are aboard their vehicles parked on Levesque Boulevard near the bridge of Highway 25 in Laval, when a gunman hidden in the bushes takes targeted. Armed with an AK-47 machine gun, the shooter - ever accused - shot 17 times. Mignacca replica with six shots from his Glock pistol. No one was injured in the shooting.

Desjardins, who works in the field of construction, left the scene with a bang aboard his BMW SUV pierced shots and went on one of its sites, located nearby. Police officers stand there quickly and arrested him.

"Yes, it's me who's been shot," said Desjardins them, but he says he does not complain.

Desjardins said later that two bullets grazed his head. He adds that "he understands the game, he did a pen and has not to talk."

He criticizes all the same that his assailant then decided to take a bus from the Société de transport de Laval happening simultaneously. The attack could have been innocent victims. "It's disgusting the way this has been done," he told police.

According to the police investigation, Desjardins immediately Salvatore Montagna suspected of being behind the attempted murder of which he was a victim.

Soon after, Raynald Desjardins calls his trusted man Giuseppe Bertolo, cited in Charbonneau commission, to make him aware of the events.

The guy then phone Domenico Arcuri, linked to clan Montagna, police said. It is not known the content of their conversation.

Bertolo receives a message Arcuri, who offered him a meeting with him and Montagna. It will take place in the middle of the afternoon.

At 14h, two police go to the workplace Desjardins Groupe immobilier Samara promoter, hoping that "no war" is triggered. Desjardins tells them that it is peaceful in nature. The investigators visit other relatives of the boss that day to try to ease tensions.

At 3:23 p.m., Giuseppe Bertolo, Domenico Arcuri and Salvatore Montagna meet at a Tim Hortons in eastern Montreal. Police do not know what they said. Other police go at the same time the home of Salvatore Montagna in the borough of Saint-Hubert.
At 17h, lawyer Joe Di Maulo reminds police officers. They explain the reason for their action. The criminalist said it will recall to fix a meeting.

At 18:30, police officers meet Joe Di Maulo and his lawyer in Rosemère restaurant. They ask the chieftain to "use his influence with the people involved to reduce tensions and avoid war." Di Maulo meets the media see it more important than it actually is.

Montagna would later contacted Desjardins to tell him he had nothing to do with the attack in Laval, according to the testimony of an investigator and police documents filed during the investigation released the kingpin in May 2013.

Desjardins did not believed likely.

Oral arguments on the sentence to impose on the boss will take place on 21 December 2015. The maximum sentence under the Criminal Code is life imprisonment.

He probably be safer in jail then out on the streets. He figures by the time he gets out, everything will cool down, and hopefully certain people will forget about it.
