that's correct. Santantonio was killed in 1963. Scarpa told the FBI that Meli was involved in the murder, although I don't know if that was ever confirmed.
The Santantonio murder is one of those cases where they had the guys responsible for the murder dead to rights, except that the wiretap evidence ended up inadmissible. They recorded Peter Ferrara planning the murder and assigning the different roles in the hit. An associate in the crew was tapped to be the shooter but wound up jailed on an unrelated pretext on the day of the murder. Most of the guys involved are the same ones mentioned later by Gravano as being in on murders under Aurello.
It's also interesting how little attention Santantonio received. This was the Gambino's own Scarpa, potentially their own Valachi, and unlike the other informants this one was found out (from an LE source or otherwise), successfully killed and the confirmed participants got away with it.
Thanks for the clarification. The "Gambino's own Scarpa" is a good way of putting it. Does anyone know if Valachi had a reaction to his murder? Sanatanotnio was widely assumed on the street to have been an informant, and it happened just before Valachi testified. Bobby Kennedy must have used all his influence to mostly bury this story.
