Anthony (Gov) Guarnieri - born 5/11/1911 in Utica, NY. Long time inducted member, eventual “Capo di decina” in the Northeastern Pennsylvania Family, better known as the “Bufalino Family” of Pittston, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Close confidant and right-hand man to Giuseppe (Joe) Barbara Sr., of Endicott, NY (Former Boss of the family). Maintained his position of prominence with succeeding boss Rosario (Russ) Bufalino. Guarnieri headed the NYS crew based in the Binghamton, NY area, which had appx 8-10 inducted soldiers and numerous associates. LIved at 225 Oak Hill Ave., Endicott, NY, for many years. Held ownership interests in several garment factories including
Tri-Cities Dress Co., Owego Textile Co., in Binghamton, and Monet Fashions in NYC. Highly trusted by Barbara and Bufalino, and served as a strong arm and suspected enforcer. A suspect in several gangland homicides over the years including Martin Angricola in 1948 and James (Jimmy Flip) DeFilippo in 1952. Active in policy (lottery) rackets, shylocking, counterfeit watches and clothes, floating crap games, alcohol bootlegging and garment racketeering. Arrests for gambling (1945), contriving a lottery business (1948), possession of a gun, extortion and conspiracy (1974), and RICO charges in Florida (1986). Close associates/members of his regime included; Louis Marconi, Louis Cordi, Anthony Mosco, Stanley Reppucci, Samuel Rotella, Augustine Riolo, Salvatore (Blackie) Aleccia, Ignazio (Nat) Cannone, Frank Cannone, Manny Zicari, Robert Guarnieri...... Guarnieri was exposed, as were 60 others, at the infamous “Apalachin Meeting” on November 14, 1957. The mob would never be the same. And for Guarnieri, a spot light was shined on him The would follow him for the rest of his underworld career. As Joe Barbara’s close confidant, Guarnieri in particular was haunted by investigators. He pleaded the Fifth Amendment 32 times to questions asked before the NY Crime Commission..... Guarnieri split his time between Binghamton, Pittston PA, and NYC’s garment district for many decades. And in later life, in south Florida, where he settled, buying a home. By the 1980’s he came under scrutiny of Florida authorities, and was indicted on multiple charges of fraud, counterfeiting, drug conspiracy, etc. He cashed in his chips and pleaded guilty in 1988, receiving 2 years in prison. At 77 years old, it was a low point for him. Gov died shortly thereafter. I do not believe he served a day!
