All speculation, but its entirely possible Corallo wanted Casso/Amuso as the admin, and OK'd Luongo being hit to pre-emptively stop the Bronx faction from challenging that after he went away. The idea of powerbases exists in reality, but it may not be all that a guy might take into consideration. Maybe he was feeling closer to Funari than Tom Mix by the end, who knows.
And when Casso rats, he makes dramatizes it by saying no we killed him to get the top spot - not we got it and then we got the OK to take down a potential threat.
And/or, maybe Ducks thought that having Bronx guys not steer the ship this time around would save them from the heat that was put on him and Tom Mix.
Who knows
i think the school of thought is that Furnari convinced Corallo that Amuso and Casso were the guys... while at the exact same time, Santoro was trying to play puppet master and put Luongo in there. So, to stop Santoro, Corallo and Furnari ordered the hit on Luongo
D’Arco said in his book, very briefly, “Tom Mix was trying to take over the family from Prison”
maybe Corallo and Santoro werent as unified as we were lead to believe? maybe there was tension there toward the end of their runs? what I dont get is that why were the commission case bosses the LAST bosses to relinquish full control after sentencing? ever since then every time we see a boss get taken down, he stays official and appoints an acting. its weird that Corallo and the Lucchese admin didnt do that?
after reading more and thinking about it, I believe this ties directly into them eventually killing DiLapi (Santoro’s nephew), Salerno, and forcing Macaluso into retirement. As much as they were painted as blood thirsty lunatics, it IS the mob...people are treacherous. Even if they are older, more traditional, more honorable or however the old guard Uptown guys are to be painted...they are still criminals. The Bronx faction could have very well been a legit threat to Amuso and could have very well been plotting to kill him, his brother, Casso, etc.
