I saw it at the time. Seemed to be in the southeast part of the state. Couldn't find any mob connections.
Fall River isn’t far from where I live. It’s called the Southcoast. Southeast Massachusetts starts in Quincy and stretches all the way down to the outer tip of Cape Cod. Fall River is very close to the Rhode Island state line and less than 20 minutes from Providence. Tim Mello was a longtime gambling kingpin/narcotics trafficker in the Fall River/New Bedford/Taunton area, which are very old fishing towns and manufacturing towns. They have an extremely large Brazilian and Portuguese population. Anyhow, From about 1990 to 2002 Massachusetts and Rhode Island state police and local detectives here can place Mr. Mello with a veritable who’s who of organized crime: lunch with Providence Mafia captain Anthony “the Saint” St. Laurent, an arrest with mob associate and convicted drug dealer Gordon O’Brien of Taunton, and friendships with local underworld players like Jonathan Vendatouli of Fall River and William “Billy X” Xifaras of New Bedford. St. Laurent got his cut from Mello. My point is that the south coast area was dominated by the Providence faction for close to 80 years. It wasn’t unusual for St. Laurent to employ Brazilian and Portuguese bookmakers because he ran that territory. I have no idea who is running Gambling in Providence but I’m sure there are still some remnants of the old guard still operating.
I can’t say that I recognize the names but I’m wondering who they’re connected to. That could tell a different story. Maybe some Boston help? TJ?
