Vario crew is based in Canarsie mainly and at one point this crew became inactive under Matthew Madonna because according to John Pennisi, there were 0 Brooklyn crews in the Lucchese Family by the time DeSantis took over in 2017.DeSantis wants to reinstate the original Brooklyn crew which I believe is a reference to the 19th hole crew in Bensonhurst, founded by Furnari then took over by Vic Amuso in 1981.Papagni would most likely be the Capo of the reinstated crew in Bensonhurst. As for a separate crew in Canarsie, I’m not sure about but it’s definitely an idea for DeSantis if he really wants to bring the family back to Brooklyn like he said.
The Vario crew is the same as the Cutaia-Castelucci crew, it just moved to Staten Island. It's the same crew, and it was still the Brooklyn faction, but it just moved headquarters over time
Castelucci formerly was the Capo of the Bensonhurst crew until his imprisonment, he moved the crew to Staten Island.Pennisi says there was only one Brooklyn crew during his time which could mean that the Vario crew merged with the Bensonhurst crew.I believe the crews are different because the Vario crew is separate to the Bensonhurst crew.Pennisi has referred to Castelucci’s crew as the Bensonhurst crew which moved to Staten Island.
Seems through a combination of attrition, merging, transferring, etc. the multiple Lucchese crews in Brooklyn were consolidated down to one. As chin said, it seems it was also the Staten Island crew because that's where Castellucci was based while he was captain. Also because, as Pennisi said, many crew members who also lived in Staten Island were originally from Brooklyn.

Anyway, only one crew at that point - the Brooklyn/Staten Island crew. Talk about reinstating another crew in Brooklyn but it remains to be seen if that ever happened or it was just talk.
When DeSantis made a move for the Acting Boss position in 2017, he sent Vic a letter which said “There are guys out here loyal to you who want to bring the family back to Brooklyn” Judging by that, i would assume that he has reinstated a crew in Brooklyn.Though Pennisi flipped in October of 2018 and he said that there was talk of reinstating the crew but it didn’t happen during his time.Maybe Pennisi cooperation has effected the idea of reinstating a crew in Brooklyn
It seems that during the early 2000's, Capo Dom Cutaia (who was the capo of the Vario-Cutaia aka Canarsie crew) took over leading a combine "Brooklyn faction". Cutaia led his Canarsie crew and the remaining Bensonhurst crew after the Bensonhurst capo Joseph “Joey Flowers” Tangorra and most of the Bensonhurst guys were arrested in 2000 including Eugene “Boopsie” Castelle (who was serving as "Acting Underboss").

Most of the Amuso-Casso Bensonhurst Brooklyn guys were imprisoned, during the late 1990s the McDonald Ave crew (which was Casso's crew that had spilt from Bensonhurst re-merged back into the Bensonhurst crew under the combine leadership of Joey Tangorra and Eugene Castelle. After Al D'Arco flipped the Canarsie crew took a big hit and a lot of top guys were imprisoned.

It seems that when Steve Crea served as acting boss during 1998-2000 he began breaking down the Brooklyn faction, Crea began splitting up the Bensonhurst guys making them report to Bronx capo Anthony “Blue Eyes” Santorelli.

In 2000, after Crea was indicted, the consigliere and Brooklyn mobster Louis "Louie Bagels" Daidone (he was the former capo of Canarsie crew) became the new as acting boss. It seems that Capo Dom Cutaia led his Canarsie crew and was given control of all the remaining Bensonhurst guys. Cutaia lived on Staten Island himself and used John “Sidburns” Cerrella as an acting capo. When the acting boss Daidone was imprisoned, the family was controlled by the Bronx ruling panel Aniello Migliore, Joseph DiNapoli and Matthew Madonna which allowed Cutaia to remain the capo of the combined "Brooklyn faction". In 2010, Cutaia was imprisoned again and very sick, it seems Cutaia may have stepped down. Cutaia's grandsons began running around with Bronx "capo" John Lubrano (possibly running a new farm team).

It is possible that in 2010, the Bronx crew broke up part of the "Brooklyn faction" that was controlled by Cutaia and created a new long island crew under capo Joe Cafe Desena (who Pennisi said was close with Madonna all the time). This allowed the Bronx acting boss Matty Madonna and Joe DiNapoli to make John Castellucci the new capo remaining Brooklyn faction after a big transfer of soldiers to other crews. Castellucci was original from the Bensonhurst crew but had made friends with Joe DiNapoli in prison. Pennisi stated that all the old time Brooklyn guys refused to respect or report to Castellucci.

Castellucci took over a small crew of guys which was known as the "Brooklyn faction" but based in Staten Island. His crew consisted of Eugene Castelle (from Bensonhurst crew), Joseph DiBenedetto (Amuso's son in-law), Vincent Zappola (from Bensonhurst crew), Scotty Gervasi (from Bensonhurst crew), Anthony “Spanky” Castelle (brother to Castellucci), John Cerrella (from Canarsie crew), Anthony Guzzo (new made member), John Pennisi (new made member) and possibly others.

In 2017, when DeSantis becomes acting boss, he re-creates the original Brooklyn crew (which is probably a reference to the Vario-Cutaia aka Canarsie crew). He makes Patrick “Patty Red” Dellorusso the new capo (who is original from the Canarsie crew). Pennisi stated that plans were to give Dellorusso a few guys which included Carlo Profeta (who was living in Florida, a former Cutaia's Canarsie crew member), John “Johnny Sideburns” Cerrella (from acting capo to Cutaia and Canarsie crew member) along with few new made members Danny “Pilot” Campo, John “Butch” Arpino,, Louis “Louie Jet” Gampero (who is close associate to Ray Argentina). When Dellorusso became "acting underboss" someone possible replaced him maybe Carlo Profeta, John Cerrella or Ray Argentina or someone else.

Pennisi also stated that DeSantis was going breakdown Castellucci back down to soldier and make Frank “Frankie Bones” Papagni the new capo of Castellucci's "Brooklyn faction", allowing DeSantis to recreate the Bensonhurst crew.

Thank you for that informative post.Cutaia was the liaison between Amuso and the ruling panel which consisted of Madonna,DiNapoli and Migliore.I believe that the Bronx Faction was breaking down the Brooklyn Faction after Daidone was sentenced to life, that’s when Vic made the ruling panel. Yes, I remember Pennisi said they put Spanky and Boopies into Big John Castellucci crew after a big shift in soldiers I don't know when that happened. Castellucci was stripped of his rank after his imprisonment. But Castellucci and his brother Eugene "Boopies" are allied with the Bronx guys, hoping one day to regain his capo position.

Under DeSantis leadership he broke apart the combined "Brooklyn faction" recreating two crews: Bensonhurst crew and the old Brooklyn Canarsie crew. The Brooklyn guys also put George Zappola (a Bensonhurst guy), to run the Jersey Crew. It seems the Brooklyn guys are trying to keep the leadership of the Lucchese family. But the Bronx guys still have the two long island crews (Avellino and DeSena) on their side.

No report on who took over the Prince Street Crew after Dominic Truscello died. DeSantis could possibly choose another Brooklyn guy or someone within the crew to led.

Yes, I believe Ray Argentina is still on parole, but they will make him the capo of Dellorusso (recreated Brooklyn Canarsie crew). The way Pennisi spoke of Ray Argentina he was very liked and respected by the Brooklyn guys. Argentina will probably take over the crew that Dellorusso built seeming they were his guys from before he went to prison.
- Louis “Louie Jet” Gampero was said by Pennisi belonged to Ray Argentina
- Danny “Pilot” Campo and John “Butch” Arpino were both around Dellorusso for long time and will be loyal to Argentina
- Carlo Profeta - possible acting capo for the crew. He was living in Florida, he was a former Cutaia's Canarsie crew member, probably knows Argentina
- John “Johnny Sideburns” Cerrella - acting capo to Cutaia and Canarsie crew member, probably help Argentina

DeSantis might bring back some old Canarsie guys like Michael "Mikey Bones" Corcione and Salvatore Cutaia

Guys Pennisi has described as members of Castelucci's crew during his (Pennisi's) time as a made guy:

- Anthony Castelle (eventually given back to Castelucci after being under Joseph DeSena)
- Eugene Castelle (eventually given back to Castelucci after being in one of the Bronx crews)
- John Cerrella
- Michael DeSantis (transferred to Castelucci after being under Carmine Avellino, later promoted to acting boss)
- Joseph DiBenedetto
- Scott Gervasi
- Anthony Guzzo (inducted 2013)
- John Pennisi (inducted 2013)
- John Perna (briefly moved from the New Jersey crew to Castelucci, then moved back)
- Ralph Perna (briefly moved from the New Jersey crew to Castelucci, then moved back)
- Joseph M Perna (transferred to Castelucci after his brother and father were put back with the Jersey crew)
- Daniel Rizzo (died 2015)
- Vincent Zappola

Pennisi said that there was 2 crews in the Bronx, they had 0 in Brooklyn. It’s clear that Crea was decreasing the power that Brooklyn had.Castelucci was loyal to the Bronx because of Joe DiNapoli, former Consigliere who was saved from a heart attack in prison by John “Big John” Castelucci.

Pennisi said that Castelucci actually asked him why didn’t he tell him about the move that DeSantis made because Big John actually wanted to stop it.Castelucci was an associate when the Amuso loyalists went away and later they all knew why he became a made man and didn’t respect him.Mikey DeSantis also told Pennisi that he doesn’t want to straighten out guys who saved wiseguys from heart attacks in prison.Castelucci was stripped of a lot of his guys by DeSantis who then later allowed him to have his brothers because of the fact that he took so many guys away from him.Brothers are not allowed in the same crew together usually.I think Ray Argentina is on parole, I think he will be a Capo when he’s of parole.

John Pennisi hasn’t mentioned the Canarsie crew as being reinstated but he said they did want to reinstate a crew in Brooklyn around Bensonhurst but didn’t mention Canarsie.Where it gets a little confusing is that Patty Dellorusso was elevated to become a Capo but John said that they didn’t reinstate the Brooklyn crew during his time.Dellorusso and Pennisi spent a lot of time together in Long Island.John also stated in court that during his time they had the Brooklyn/Staten Island crew referring to Castelucci.Zappola was originally supposed to become the Acting Boss.If Mikey DeSantis and Patty get indicted then it’s a real possibility that Zappola could step into the Acting Boss position.Interestingly, Pennisi also said that there will be “big changes” in the Lucchese Family if Vic Amuso passes away.

Ray is living in Bay Ridge he wakes up everyday goes to his construction job and busts his ass which I’ve never known him to do. So for now it looks like he’s trying to build his life back (when he got out after this last bid his wife divorced him) and keep a low profile. He’s def back in the mix tho as an active guy but I think you’re all off saying he becomes a captain. Soldier for life imo

Interesting.Once he’s of parole, I think he could end up as a Capo.I remember reading an article which did identify him as a Capo.I remember reading an article from when he was arrested for that scheme that sent him away for a very long time.

He was never a captain. He did a lot of time for an armored car robbery with Louie Bagels and his most recent stretch with Louie Jet and Little Robert Brasco for a HUD scam with a some coke sales sprinkled on top.

Ray could be made capo he was well respected by the Brooklyn guys, especially the old Vario guys left. They would probably give Ray a good acting capo to help him out. Most capos have acting capos who run most of the crew.

Zappola took over the Jersey crew .... Zappola didn't know any of Jersey guys but is using a strong acting capo Joe R. Perna who is actually running the crew. Zappola is sitting back collecting a big tribute from the crew as the capo and staying low key. Best decision he made staying away from the acting boss position. Zappola is making more money running the Jersey crew then the Brooklyn crew.

Zappola is very smart.Besides from just being comfortable in Jersey, it’s likely that he also thought about how the Acting Boss position would put a target on this back.Amuso has had 6 Acting Bosses.2 of them flipped,D’Arco and DeFede.3 are now serving life sentences.Crea,Daidone and Madonna. Now here is Michael DeSantis.Jerry Capeci has said that the Manhattan US Attorneys office is building a “blockbuster” racketeering case against DeSantis and the Underboss Dellorusso. If DeSantis is indicted then Zappola could step up or even Frank “Frankie Bones” Papagni. If the Brooklyn Faction wants to keep the administration positions then Zappola or Papagni have to step up if DeSantis is indicted.

Yes, correct the acting boss position puts a target on you. I don't see Zappola wanting to spend the rest of his life in prison when he could stay in New Jersey getting rich in the background. I don't see “Frankie Bones” Papagni getting the top spot of acting boss or official boss (Amuso is old). The Lucchese will probably pick someone else. The way to survive in the mafia is acting like the west side Barney is always hidden.

If Zappola takes the acting boss position he will most likely use a front guy or "street boss". The Brooklyn guys might decide on giving it back to the Bronx guys and staying low key. It depends on what and who gets taken down in the upcoming DeSantis-Dellorusso indictment.... Frankie Bones Papagni could get busted with and get some real time. DeSantis guys are the Brooklyn guys so most likely Papagni is a target too.

Nowadays, a boss in that life must always be hidden like Barney if they want to maintain their position as a boss.DeSantis is not like Barney and the testimony from just one made member such as John Pennisi will have a huge impact on him if he’s indicted. If I remember correctly Papagni tried to get Joseph “Little Joey” DiBenedetto who is Amuso’s son in law, to visit him and send him a message about Papagni becoming the boss. It’s possible that Papagni could step up.

I don't see the Bronx supporting Papagni as boss they might give him underboss or leave him at the capo position. But I think Papagni will get pulled into the indictment along with DeSantis and Dellorusso.

The Brooklyn guys won't have much power if DeSantis, Dellorusso and possibly Papagni all get locked up. I see the Bronx taking back the power with maybe Andrew DiSimone stepping up or longtime Bronx capo Anthony "Blue Eyes" Santorelli.

Anthony "Bowat" Baratta I believe is in his 80s, with his old Harlem crew being broken down and spilt up. DeSantis put Bowat back in to watch over the Bronx guys and maybe made him a capo again. But Bowat won't make it to boss, DeSantis could take consigliere position away from DiSimone and give it to Bowat.

Wondering who did DeSantis put in to replace Dom Truscello to run the Prince Street crew?

According to Pennisi website and YouTube the Lucchese family is working with Philly family this might become a bigger indictment. Pennisi said that the Lucchese's Jersey faction and the Perna's knew the guys from Philly having sit-downs with Joey Merlino. Possibly George Zappola is working with Merlino and will get pulled into the indictment.

The Bronx don’t necessarily support DeSantis but it’s what Vic Amuso wants and he’s still the boss.Papagni could do it in my opinion, if Vic makes him the Acting Boss then I think the Bronx will go along with it.Pennisi has said that he’s not sure what Baratta is up to.Baratta definitely deserves to be a Capo.He was the Acting Underboss of the family when Vic and Gas became fugitives.I have the feeling that he’s not to active because Pennisi was around DeSantis and Dellorusso so surely he would have seen him on more than just one occasion or just heard his name more often.Pennisi only met him once and it was at Rao’s in East Harlem which is no surprise because Bowat loves that place.
No idea who’s running the Prince Street Crew but I remember Pennisi saying that Truscello told him that at one point he had more than 30 guys in his crew.Dom also would pay the Christmas tribute for his crew out of his own pocket.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Papagni’s name in the indictment with DeSantis and Dellorusso but I also think that Danny Campo and John “Butch” Arpino will be indicted to.Another candidate to step up to the Acting Boss position is Ray Argentina though I just don’t see Argentina or Baratta as the Acting Boss of the Lucchese Family.I don’t think it will happen

I don’t think that the Brooklyn guys will give the leadership back to the Bronx because DeSantis sent a message to Vic which said “There are guys out here loyal to you who want to bring the family back to Brooklyn” I wonder how active Anthony “Bowat” Baratta is.He’s a candidate to be the boss but I don’t think it will happen.Pennisi did confirm that DeSantis took Bowat of the shelf

True the Bronx guys do respect Amuso's orders, but it seems that the Brooklyn guys are going against Amuso's orders now. According to Pennisi the Brooklyn guys DeSantis, Dellorusso and others (which could include Papagni and Zappola) are working with the Philly boss Joe Merlino which is a big disrespect to Amuso.

I agree it's possible that Danny Campo, Butch Arpino get pulled into the indictment. But I don't see Argentina or Baratta getting close to any positions in the Administration. When the indictment is released, it will take down a lot of Brooklyn guys and a few capos. The government has been building this case for a while already it will be big. The last indictment for the Lucchese family in 2017 took out the entire admin and three capos. Last year's indictment against the Colombo's hit the entire admin and three capos also. The government is building strong cases with Rico.
