Massino first heard about the plot in vague terms from Gerlando Sciascia when he was released from prison. Sciascia and Baldo Amato volunteered to back Massino. Later in jail Massino was told about it in more detail by Barney Bellomo.

There are definitely questions as to how realistic the plot was but at the very least it's apparent that Bellomo, Sciascia, and Amato were unhappy with the Vitale-Gotti relationship and wanted to secure Massino as boss. It was felt on the street too that Vitale was trying to emulate Gotti.

Why do people always say Merlino "won" the war against Stanfa? The feds sent Stanfa and most of his loyalists to prison, leaving Merlino to fill the void they created but, unless you think the FBI was working for Merlino, you can't really credit him with winning the war. Imo, it would have been quite interesting to see who would have won if the war was allowed to continue; MAYBE Merlino would have won (or maybe not), but the feds didn't give him the chance to do so, by sending Stanfa away from his reach.
This is true. The war only ended because Stanfa's entire crew got locked up. Merlino got lucky.

John was the one trying to put the Bonanno’s back on the Commission so he had one more vote with Massino there.Doesnt make sense to me .... Any thoughts ?
Gotti didn't end up having as much control over Massino as he would have wanted. Gotti wanted Massino to back Orena during the Colombo family war but Massino refused to do so and eventually backed Persico.

Stanfa's people were fairly good at killing, too. They had a couple botched hits (Adornetto and Veasey come to mind, both of which failures apparently resulted from mishandling of ammunition) but were not, literally speaking, a gang that couldn't shoot straight, at least by general mob standards.

How much of a player was Frank Martines, Stanfa's underboss?

Pretty sure Merlino stood up to a murder wrap. Podcast or not Merlino is a stand up guy and more than deserves the right to talk shit on a sitting boss who flipped.
By all accounts, Merlino is respected by his peers. But a mob boss on a podcast? I don't care if he's talking about football or his mother's favorite pasta dish. Can you imagine what the New York guys are saying about this? And Merlino is in his 60's, that's still part of the old-school generation that practices what we all know about Cosa Nostra. It's a secret society. Joey might as well go on the Joe Rogan podcast.

I'm not sure, but it seems Stanfa didn't really trust him that much; according to this article, he even had Martines leave the room at an important meeting

Also, imo it's weird he did the John Veasey attempted hit personally, considering his position as underboss.

On the other hand there are a lot of made guys with Facebook accounts. Some even belong to mob-related Facebook groups. They're also on Instagram and other social media.

And didn’t Massino’s family disown him and cut ties?

Maybe he believed in the family is off limits. He killed a guy for thinking about kidnapping one of his kids. Massinos wife was left real estate's her daughters are probably still collecting rents on

Yes, they did. In both books on Massino that I have read that is mentioned. His daughters and wife were very upset and couldn't understand why he did it. They cut ties and remained in Howard Beach the entirely of the time.

There were problems even before he flipped as it came out in court that Massino brought a girlfriend with him when he was on the lam in the 1980s. The wife was said to have been very upset over this.
