Two more arson attacks: attacks continue against the Accurso family

I think that makes 7 events targeting the Accursos in the last couple months.

I haven't been paying attention to Montreal but this attempted hit on Del Balso in November is a pretty big deal up there as he was one of the big money guys there around the Rizzutos in sort of like the second or third tier and inside the club hanging out with them, etc. Around Giordano and Arcadi, as I understand from reading a made guy with a sense of entitlement...who does he supposedly owe debts too? Is that just wild speculation? Thats what I read...who knows. Wonder specifically about his standing with Leo Rizzuto and Sollecito, Jr. now...seems like this would either be coming from them or they would be sticking up for him... but who knows a long time has passed and maybe people aren't friends with the same people up there anymore regardless of the past?

- Scoppa told Foti it was time that he too became a proper hitter. If he did a good job, Scoppa promised, he’d make Foti his underboss—his capo.
Underboss..

The hitman turned cooperator testified that Sal Scoppa would make Massari his capo if he killed the Falduto brothers. I reached out to the journalists who wrote that to confirm that was the actual term used and they said it was. I'm not sure where Vanity Fair is getting underboss from.
At first, it looked like the Calis had accomplished their goal. After the Faldutos ambush, they’d wrested control of the city’s Mob operations—and Sal Scoppa promptly flew to Calabria for meetings. That fall, Canadian law enforcement learned that the Scoppas had received the backing of Italian crime syndicates and were “the current leaders of the Montreal Mafia.”
The Scoppa brothers didn’t care. They were a new ‘ndrina, as Calabrians call a blood-related unit that rises to take over a city.
The part about the Scoppas being a new ndrina almost seems like filler and the classic "they're calabrian so they're Ndrangheta" story we always hear. But could it be possible they were a new ndrina from an established clan?

Nonetheless, very interesting article. Thanks for sharing Anti.

You’re welcome about the link. Over the years I’ve learned that it’s a good idea to post links to articles that have at least one new piece of information, even if the articles themselves contain egregious errors and can lead to misinformation.

The references in books and articles that mention a Mirarchi "clan" or a Scoppa "clan" have been to crime groups rather than to family-based units.

Andrew Scoppa and his siblings essentially grew up fatherless. Given that the father deserted the family when his children were young and that his wife and children lived in poverty — more evidence of deracination from 'ndrangheta roots, if there ever were any — I strongly doubt that there was travel to Badolato in Catanzaro to have a Scoppa-Scrufari 'ndrina baptized in Quebec. And an 'ndrina or a locale doesn’t have the ranks of sottocapo and capodecina as in the Sicilian CN and American LCN.

Now would the 'ndrangheta on the Italian mainland have been interested in meddling in Montreal’s affairs, either positively or negatively? meddling even if the Scoppa brothers were killed? I’m not even sure whether I’ve asked the right questions here.

The poster eurodave who used to post on Gangster BB — he also used to post here under a similar handle — wrote that the murdered Falduto brothers had ancestry from Reggio Calabria. So you have to wonder whether the Scoppas had Rizzuto loyalist Francesco Arcadi on the hitlist, even given the fact that Arcadi was “with” the Violis in the 1960s and 1970s.

I was informed on another forum where I posted the link above that the link is no longer operational, even though it was working for me just yesterday.

Below is a link to a duplicate of the article (same publisher).

You have to admire thee dedication but it seems like a real long shot that anybody is going to collect from Tony Accurso...I just don't understand how anyone can hope he wakes up one day and decides "you know what, I'll just start paying these guys to make this stop..." And how would you successfully take his money and keep it with all the heat from the fire bombs?

It looks like they're saying Tony Accurso's extortion and the events targeting his daughter and son in law are separate. Tony Accurso's extortion is believed be to coming from a group led by someone serving life and they're targeting Lebanese owned businesses. The main theory for the events targeting the daughter and son in law is related to some business dispute.
