The Deuce (HBO)

Post by Clark » Wed Sep 27, 2017 8:42 am

Anyone watching the new David Simon show, The Deuce? A bit of a slow start but I am liking it. The sets and recreation of 1970s Time Square is amazing. They are definitely taking inspiration from true events, and they even have some real characters tossed in (ie. Mickey Spillane was in the last episode and I see Matty the Horse on the cast list).

For those that haven't heard about it:

"The Deuce tells the story of the legalization and ensuing rise of the porn industry in New York beginning in the 1970s. Themes explored include the violence of the drug epidemic and the resulting real estate booms and busts that coincided with the change. The show's title is derived from the nickname for 42nd Street between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue."

I agree it is slow so far. The main hooker played by I think Maggie Gyllenhaal looks like a catchers mitt. They could have chosen a better looking actress. Maybe they wanted that on purpose though.

Catching up on it now, slow but moves along, gets better here and there with certain things. For the most part I like it but I also kind of liked Vinyl and Deadwood, it could go out the same way as those two.

This show grew on me a lot....supposedly it's about a real bar and characters with most names changed

I really wanted to like it a lot, but thought it was soooo slow. It was like there was no story arc to it. Nothing seemed to happen. But then again, I guess I'm used to shows and movies where there is more action.
