Potential legal sports betting and the mob

Several articles (including those below) over the past few days have been talking about the Supreme Court deciding to hear oral arguments for and against PAPSA (Professional And Amateur Sports Protection Act). Many seem to think it's only a matter of time before sports betting will be legalized in those states that choose to have it. New Jersey has been leading the way in the push for it and the casinos in New York and Pennsylvania would apparently offer it if the decision goes that way.

This obviously brings up the question of how much an affect legalized sports betting would have on the mob. Bookmaking is the #1 money maker for all the families and the only form of gambling that hasn't been cut into by the state lottery, state and Indian casinos, and other forms of legal gambling. Er, excuse me, "gaming."

Of course it's been pointed out before the mob bookie offers the ability for players to bet on credit without putting up the money. And, rather having to go to a casino, the player can just go online to an offshore-based website, enter his info, place the bet there, and settle up with the bookie later. So there will always be that market for the mob to service.

I'm curious how much others think potential legalized sports betting could affect the mob's business?

here is why I think it won't effect that much:

1) credit. a local bookie gives you a line of credit. you do not have to post up. most will work with you if you lose more than you can pay.
2) travel. no one wants to drive an hour to the casino to bet and drive back home. they want to login from their home computer and play or call on the phone.

#1 is biggest issue. i remember being in vegas and still calling home to bet.

I think it should be legal anyways. i can bet 1000 times an hour on blackjack but cant bet $100 and watch the Yankees for 3 hours

And you’re spot on about #1 even when I’m in Vegas I call my bookie back in Jersey because I get credit.

We’re also supposed to get legalized Marijuana here in Jersey within 100 days of the new Governor’s (Phil Murphy’s ) term. I feel that Atlantic City will add that immediately to their tourist offerings.

I got my card. 2.5 a month im allowed.

No tax either. Although I'm not exactly sure how it works in casinos with taxes.

You can but sometimes your bank or whatever blocks the payment because they flag it as resembling a fraudulent transaction.

Depositing is the easy part, getting your money is way harder. Bitcoin is the quickest and easiest route for both.

Most of it from what I can tell. It's pretty rare that we see a sports betting bust of significant size in the Northeast that isn't tied to the mob. It's one market the LCN has been successful in retaining its share of.

Thanks. Based upon that information, I still think it is easier to bet with the street bookie with a line of Credit. The other way would be a litle too much of a hassle PLUS the wife then knows too much about the betting and then you have another fucking problem.
