Mobster Suicides

Post by Pogo The Clown »

The Ligammari double suicide got my thinking of mobsters who have offed themselves. Here are some off the top of my head.

Bonanno Soldier Giovanni Ligammari
Bonanno Soldiers Pietro “Peter” Ligammari
Outfit Boss Frank Nitti
LA UnderBoss Girolamo "Momo" Adamo
Gambino Soldier Anthony “Todo” Anastasio
Gambino Soldier Nicholas “Nicky Skins” Stefanelli
LA/Detroit Soldier Carlo Licata

I'm sure there are more. Any others?

The Riccobene brother in Philly...didn't he kill himself when the Scarfo guys had him cornered? Also, Steve Raffa of the Trafficante family.

Vincenzo "James" Tripodi, longtime Calabrian Boss of Steubenville, OH committed suicide on December 17th, 1987 by putting a gun in his mouth in his gargae. He was just shy of his 88th birthday

Didn't Licata "shoot himself" twice supposedly? I'll have to Google the Ligammari double suicide. I haven't heard about that I don't guess.
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....

Yeah it was a Riccobene nephew. Apprently the Scarfo guys weren't going to kill but he thought they were.

Also Dixie search for the Ligammari double suicide here. It was talked about in one of the recent Bonanno threads.

Two Colombo members comes to mind. Sam Badalamenti in 1967 (former skipper who was demoted in 1964) and Tony "Gawk" Augello who shot himself in a telephone booth in 1983 if I remember correctly.
There you have it, never printed before.

Michael Angelino, Bonanno member who died in 1963, most likely committed suicide. He must be the "Marco Angelo" who killed himself as discussed on the Magaddino recordings. Magaddino believed he was murdered by the Bonannos and it was staged to be a suicide, but Paul Sciacca had spoken with Angelino on the phone right before he killed himself and confirmed it was suicide.

An informant claimed that one of the reasons for Joe Biondo's demotion from underboss in the 1960s was because he had killed someone named "Andy" who was involved in several bakeries and staged it to look like a suicide. This is in reference to Andrew Alberti, Gambino soldier and bakery owner, who supposedly killed himself. I've got no clue if the suicide was staged or not, but like in the Angelino case it seems like mafia suicides inevitably invite other theories.

This could be one of the myths Christie was looking for in his other topic... the idea that the mafia has expertly killed people and staged it to look like suicide. While it may have happened here and there throughout history, it's not part of the mob's typical MO.

Sam Alex, ex-Capone gangster, Outfit member and older brother of Gus Alex. Shot himself in the head with .38 revolver, after he was diagnosed with cancer.

There are also of other cases but i find them all suspicious of being a clear suicide.

Gerald Scarpelli, 1988. Hung himself in his cell. He had just begun cooperating with the government and then attempted to recant what he said in his FBI interrogation. There is some speculation that his murder was an inside job (Outfit hitman Frank Schweihs was being held in the same prison awaiting trial) but nothing has ever been proven.
